Castle Mountain, 2766m, Aug 4th, 2008

Probably no mountain in the Rockies deserve more his name than Castle Mountain even if this mountain almost lost his name to Eisenhower mountain in the middle of the 20th century. The shape of this mountain, mid way between banff and lake louise, are making of this one the most outstanding mountain between Banff and the lake. A real icon, a Rockies landmark even! Shape like a castle this mountain seem out of reach when view from the trans-canada hwy. However, with a journey of 29 km round trip this mountain is probably one of the easiest scrambles of the range. Surprisingly this mountain offer barely any challenge except endurance. It's a long journey, but a pristine journey. On the way, we can enjoy two pristine lakes and once we reach the summit we can see Mount Assiniboine standing strong and free. The ridge of this mountain can offer many fossil and the shape of the rocks make this hike trully unique in the Rockies. A must do mountain for all hiking lovers! Mount Assiniboine can be spot in the fur distance as a bonus if the weather is good.

Hiking time: 9-12hrs
Difficulty: easy. A good warm up to Cascade mountain and even Rundle Mountain
Best time: August or when the mountain is snow free
